Washington’s voters have spoken, and the message is clear: our state’s commitment to tackling the climate crisis is stronger than ever. The defeat of Initiative 2117 marks a crucial victory in protecting Washington’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA) and all it represents for the future of our environment, communities, and wildlife.
At Audubon Washington, we’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone with the many dedicated supporters who fought to uphold Washington’s climate commitments. In a year when national election outcomes have made state-level actions more critical, this victory underscores the power of our grassroots network and the collective action of individuals who care deeply about birds and the places they call home.
A State-Level Success with National Significance
Birds are facing an ever-growing list of threats with climate change at the forefront. In the face of growing climate challenges, state policies like Washington’s Climate Commitment Act are becoming increasingly important.
With I-2117 defeated, Washington can continue to lead by example, demonstrating that strong climate policies not only protect the environment but also drive economic growth, create green jobs, and promote social equity.
Thank You to Audubon’s Grassroots Network
The successful defeat of I-2117 would not have been possible without Audubon’s grassroots network of chapter leaders, volunteers, and members across the state who mobilized to protect the CCA. From sharing information with their communities to engaging in direct voter outreach, our volunteers played a critical role in ensuring Washingtonians understood the stakes and got out to vote.
Securing a Climate-Resilient Future with the CCA
The CCA supports efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, fund clean energy initiatives, and implement natural climate solutions. CCA funding is also essential for local sea level rise planning, which is critical to for the birds and people that call Puget Sound home.
Through the CCA, our state can invest in green infrastructure, conservation programs, and projects that benefit both birds and people, such as habitat restoration and clean energy innovations, no matter what happens at the federal level.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Our Climate Commitments
This victory is just one step in our journey toward a healthier, more resilient Washington and our commitment to halt and reverse the decline of birds in North America. Audubon Washington will continue working with state leaders, local communities, and our network of supporters to ensure that the CCA is implemented effectively and that it delivers on its promises for climate justice and environmental protection.
Thank you, Washington voters and volunteers, for choosing to protect our climate, our wildlife, and our shared future.
