"Bird Bill" of 2004

The 2004 Legislature unanimously passed Important Bird Areas legislation the first year it was introduced – a process that usually takes about three years. Once again, Audubon Washington’s staff and citizen advocates demonstrated, through this and other legislation, how birds, habitat, and environmental issues are common interests that eclipse political boundaries.

ESHB 2650, “Recognizing Important Bird Areas (IBAs)”, provides a statewide, science-based means to recognize Important Bird Areas and locally manage these areas to restore bird habitat and populations. Click here for specific details of the bill.

Senator Bob Oke (Dist. 26- Kitsap County) and Representative Kelli Linville (Dist. 42-Whatcom County) who championed this effort and to other key legislators who assisted in moving the bill along including Senator Jacobsen (Dist. 46- Seattle) and Representatives Phil Rockefeller (Dist. 23-Kitsap County), Bob Sump (Dist. 7-Ferry and Stevens Counties), Mark Schoesler (Dist. 9-Adams and Whitman Counties.)
