Research

Two major studies were conducted recently by graduate students at the Evergreen State College in Olympia:

1) Environmental Education as a Tool for Improving Student Learning, 2003
By Oksana Bartosh

Chapters 1-3 (227 KB)
Chapters 4-6 (192 KB)
Chapters 7-Appendices (216 KB)

2) 2004 Assessment of Environmental Learning Center Visitor Attitudes Toward Environmental Education
by Karin Kraft

In 2004 Audubon Washington worked with Karin Kraft, recent graduate from Evergreen State College's Masters in Environmental Studies program, to conduct original research on environmental education.

Respondents wanted all levels of government to support and fund EE. They strongly agreed that environmental education helps:

  • Prevent expensive environmental problems (92%)
  • Preserve long-term, sustained use of natural resources (95%)
  • Workers address complex environmental problems (91%)
  • Maintain a healthy environment for people (96%)

Phase II of this research is designed to help environmental educators identify the best messages to marketing their programs and advocate for EE. This second phase is currently being conducted as a random, statewide survey. Results should be available in early 2006.
