Size
The Adriana Hess Audubon Center is next to the two-acre Adriana
Hess Wetlands Park in University Place (near Tacoma), and
features a pond, wetlands, and trails, and has a small, renovated
community building.
Location/Description
Tacoma, located in Pierce County on Puget Sound in western
Washington, is the state’s third largest city. Pierce
County emerged as one of the top five counties for center
locations in our state strategic plan for Audubon Centers
in Washington. After Seattle, Tacoma is Washington’s
most ethnically diverse city, and has the state’s second-largest
school district population. The facility at the Adriana Hess
Wetlands Park houses meeting rooms and a wonderful book and
gift shop at 2917 Morrison Rd. W, University Place, WA 98466,
253-565-9278.
Partnership
This project is a partnership between the Tahoma
Audubon Society, Audubon Washington, and University Place
Parks Department.
Key Audience
With a population of 700,000 – 21% of whom are described
as ethnic minorities – Pierce County, including Tacoma
(population 194,000) is the second-largest county in Washington
state and is predicted to grow to nearly one million by 2020.
The county currently has a K-12 population of 116,000 students.
Conservation
In the Adriana Hess Park, volunteers have removed exotic plants
and replanted native grasses, ground cover, wildflowers, and
shrubs around wetlands, in meadows, and forest uplands. The
ponds host Wood Ducks and Mallards, while Red-winged Blackbirds
call from the cattails and Great Blue and Green Herons fish
in the shallows.
