HABITAT: 2,400-acre WDFW tideland marsh located in major waterfowl wintering area of Pacific Flyway.
BIRDING:
More than 180 species use this area. During winter, thousands of Snow Geese are joined by numerous Trumpeter and Tundra Swans; Golden-crowned and Lincoln’s Sparrows are also present. Birds of prey include Ospreys, Bald Eagles and Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks. During migration, watch for Greater Yellowlegs, Marsh Wrens, White-crowned Sparrows, Rufous Hummingbirds, Tree Swallows, and Bewick’s Wrens.
VIEWING:
2-mile loop trail begins at headquarters. Check trees and shrubs along road and parking area for Yellow-rumped, Wilson’s, and Yellow Warblers; Common Yellowthroats, sparrows, and woodpeckers. Do not walk trails during hunting season. Avoid treacherous mud flats.
ACCESS:
From I-5, take exit 221 (Lake McMurray/Conway), and turn west. Drive 0.1 mile. Turn right (west) onto Fir Island Rd. Drive west 1.7 miles. Turn left (south) onto Wylie Rd. Drive 1 mile to WDFW entrance. Continue straight 0.1 mile. Turn right (south) to parking lot.
