HABITAT: WDFW site w/ dikes separating tidelands and marshes from fields where barley is grown for wintering waterfowl.
BIRDING: This superb fall and winter spot for raptors commonly features Peregrine Falcons and American Kestrels, while Gyrfalcons, Merlins, and Prairie Falcons are often present. Bald Eagles, Northern Harriers, Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks, and Short-eared Owls hunt in fields during the day, Barn Owls at night. Look along shoreline for Dunlins and Black-bellied Plovers in winter, Western Sandpipers in fall. Also see waterfowl in fields, and on ponds and tide flats.
VIEWING: Take trail along sea dike to see raptors soaring over fields. Peregrine Falcons often perch atop utility poles at the “T” intersection.
ACCESS: From Hwy 20 at milepost 53.2, turn north onto Bayview-Edison Rd. Drive 7.7 miles. Turn left (west) at “T” intersection onto Samish Island Rd. Drive 0.7 mile to parking lot.
