HABITAT: National park campground at edge of Ross Lake National Recreation Area’s coniferous and riparian landscapes.
BIRDING: Year-round species include Pileated Woodpecker, Varied Thrush, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Steller’s Jay, and Barred Owl. Spring, summer, and fall bring Swainson’s Thrushes, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Warbling Vireos, and Black and Vaux’s Swifts. Watch for Western Tanagers, swallows, and flycatchers in summer.
VIEWING: From south campground, walk Thunder Arm shore of Diablo Lake past amphitheater to 0.8-mile-long Thunder Creek Trail. From north campground, take 1.8-mile Thunder Knob Trail. Listen for owls at night during spring and summer. In winter, watch for ducks on lake, and Red Crossbills in fir trees.
ACCESS: From Hwy 20 at milepost 130.2, turn into camping area.
