HABITAT:
2-mile-long gorge w/ canyon walls rising from coniferous and riparian forest. Owned by WDFW.
BIRDING: Primary species include Golden and Bald Eagle, Canyon Wren, American Kestrel, and Blue Grouse. Also found here are White-throated Swifts, Cliff and Violet-green Swallows, White-breasted Nuthatches, Nashville Warblers, and Lazuli Buntings.
VIEWING:
Walk along abandoned dirt road. Check fir trees for Western Tanagers, scan geologic formations for eagle nests — and keep a sharp eye out for rattlesnakes.
ACCESS:
From Hwy 20 at milepost 193.5, in town of Winthrop, turn south onto Eastside Winthrop-Twisp Rd. Drive 2.3 miles. Turn left (east) onto Bear Creek Rd. Drive 1.7 miles. Turn right (east) onto Lester Rd. Drive 1.1 miles. Take right at Y, drive 1.2 miles. Take right at Y again, drive 1.1 miles, and park at gate.
